What does “board-certified specialist” mean in Korea?
In Korea, any licensed dentist may legally offer braces or treat children. The title of specialist (전문의) is different: it is granted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare to dentists who complete additional, structured training in one field and then pass a national specialist examination.
In general terms, the path looks like this:
- Dental degree and licence. Graduation from a dental school and the national dental licensing examination.
- Hospital training. An internship followed by a residency in a single specialty at an accredited training hospital, typically lasting several years in total.
- Specialist examination. A national examination in that specialty. Dentists who pass are certified as specialists by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Orthodontics (치과교정과) and pediatric dentistry (소아치과) are two of the recognised dental specialties. Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee is certified in orthodontics and Dr. Ho-seon Lee in pediatric dentistry. Under Korean law, a specialty can be displayed in a clinic’s name only by a certified specialist, which is why our registered Korean name includes 치과교정과 (orthodontics).

How do our two specialists work together?
Children’s teeth and jaws change quickly, and dental health and bite development affect each other. Having both specialists in one clinic makes coordination simpler:
- A cavity or early baby-tooth loss found at a check-up can be reviewed for its effect on spacing, and a space maintainer considered if needed.
- Children who show signs of crowding, crossbite or habits such as thumb sucking can be referred for a children’s orthodontic assessment .
- Children and teens in braces can keep up regular check-ups and cleanings, which matters because brackets make teeth harder to clean. See dental care during braces .
For orthodontics, Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee remains your orthodontist throughout, from first consultation to debonding; patients are not passed between doctors.

Questions about our doctors
How can I check that a dentist in Korea is a certified specialist?
Look for the specialty in the clinic’s official name and ask to see the Ministry of Health and Welfare specialist certificate, which is often displayed in the clinic. Specialist titles are written as 치과교정과 전문의 for orthodontics and 소아치과 전문의 for pediatric dentistry. You are always welcome to ask about a dentist’s training before you start treatment.
Which doctor will my child see?
It depends on the reason for the visit. Check-ups, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, fillings, baby-tooth crowns, laughing-gas sedation and dental injuries are led by Dr. Ho-seon Lee. Bite, jaw-growth and alignment questions, including braces and children’s aligners, are handled by Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee. If you are unsure, tell us your concern and we will book the right appointment.
Do the two doctors share information about my child?
Yes, when it is relevant to your child’s care. Because both specialists work in the same clinic, findings such as decay near a tooth that is about to move, or an early-lost baby tooth affecting space, can be discussed directly between them. Parents are kept informed and are part of every treatment decision.
Can I request an English-speaking doctor for my appointment?
Orthodontic consultations and explanations are given in English by Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee. For a child’s dental visit, mention when you book that you would like English support, and Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee and our team can help explain your child’s care in English. Booking by WhatsApp lets you write to us in English from the start.
