How should you read before-and-after photos?
Case photos are useful for understanding what orthodontics can do, but they are easy to over-read. Keep these points in mind:
- Each case is one person. Two people with similar-looking teeth can need very different plans because of differences in roots, bone, growth, gums and habits.
- Photos show only the surface. Dr. Lee also relies on 3D CT, digital scans and a clinical examination to see roots, bone and jaw joints, none of which appear in a smile photo.
- Read the details, not just the pictures. Age group, appliance, whether teeth were removed and the treatment dates tell you as much as the images do.
- “After” is the end of active treatment, not the end of care. Teeth tend to drift without retainers, so long-term stability depends on retention.
- Duration is not a promise. Treatment time depends on biology, the plan and, with aligners, daily wear.
What do these three cases have in common?
All three were treated without extractions, and two involved canines that came in outside the line of the other teeth together with a deep bite. That does not mean extractions are never needed. Whether there is enough room depends on how much space is missing, the bone around the roots and the balance of the lips and face, so the decision is made case by case after a full examination.

Results vary, and treatment has risks
These photographs show individual results and are not a prediction of yours. Orthodontic treatment can cause temporary discomfort and, in some cases, root shortening (root resorption), tooth decay or gum problems if teeth are not cleaned well, and relapse if retainers are not worn as instructed. Every case on this site is published with the patient’s consent. Read our medical disclaimer for more.
Before and after FAQs
Are these photographs of real patients?
Yes. All three cases were treated by Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee and are published with each patient’s consent. To protect privacy, we share only the age group, the concern, the appliance, whether teeth were removed and the treatment dates, and nothing that could identify the person.
Will my teeth look like one of these results?
Not necessarily. A case that looks similar to yours may differ in root position, bone, growth or bite in ways photos cannot show. After your examination, Dr. Lee explains what she expects treatment to achieve in your case, including its limits, so your expectations are based on your own records.
Why were these cases treated without removing teeth?
In each case the examination showed that the teeth could be aligned and the bite corrected without extractions. That is not true for everyone. When space is severely short or the lips and teeth are very full, removing teeth can give a more stable or balanced result. Dr. Lee explains the reasons for either choice.
Does the treatment time include wearing retainers?
No. The months shown cover active treatment, from fitting the braces or first aligners to finishing that phase. Retention starts afterwards and continues long term, with check-ups at the clinic. Retainers are what keep the result shown in the after photograph from slowly drifting back.
Can I send photos of my teeth before booking a consultation?
Yes. Photos sent with your message on WhatsApp or KakaoTalk help us understand your concern and plan your first visit. They cannot replace an examination, though: a diagnosis and treatment plan need X-rays or a 3D CT scan, a digital scan and an in-person check with Dr. Lee.

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment results and duration vary from person to person. Orthodontic treatment can cause temporary discomfort and, in some cases, root shortening, gum recession or tooth decay if oral hygiene is poor; teeth can relapse if retainers are not worn as instructed.
