Education and training

Dr. Lee graduated early from Hanseong Science High School with top honours, then earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) at Yonsei University College of Dentistry, graduating summa cum laude with the top award in her class. She completed her internship at Yonsei University Dental Hospital and her orthodontic residency at Severance Hospital in Sinchon, and went on to earn a PhD in Orthodontics from Yonsei University.

Her training extended beyond Korea. She completed an exchange residency in orthodontics at the University of Southern California (USC) and an exchange program at the UCLA School of Dentistry, and she has passed Parts I and II of the US National Board Dental Examination. She also completed the Digital Dentistry Program at Seoul National University School of Dentistry, training that carries through to the clinic’s digital scanning and planning.

Specialist certification in orthodontics

Dr. Lee is a board-certified orthodontic specialist (치과교정과 전문의), certified by Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare. In Korea, this title is granted only after dental school, a hospital internship and residency in orthodontics, and a national specialist examination. Any licensed dentist may offer braces, so the specialist title is a meaningful way to check that your orthodontist has completed dedicated training. Learn how Korea’s specialist system works .

Academic and teaching roles

  • Adjunct (clinical) Professor, Department of Orthodontics, Yonsei University.
  • Invisalign instructor for university hospitals, including advising on the development of a university-hospital residency curriculum.
  • Peer reviewer (2026) for the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO), the official journal of the American Association of Orthodontists.
  • First Oral Case Presentation at the 2026 meeting of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists.

Teaching and reviewing keep her close to current evidence and help her explain the reasoning behind a treatment plan clearly, whether to residents or to patients.

  • Korean Lingual Orthodontic Association: member; academic, international and planning committees
  • Member, Korean Academy of Growth Dentistry and the Korean Society for Growth-phase Orthodontics study group

Her lingual-orthodontics committee work connects to the lingual (behind-the-teeth) braces offered at the clinic, and her growth-dentistry memberships to growth guidance for children .

Invisalign experience

Dr. Lee is a 2026 Invisalign® Purple Diamond Provider and a certified Invisalign provider. Provider tiers are based on the number of Invisalign cases a doctor treats, so the status reflects experience rather than a promise of results. She also teaches Invisalign at university hospitals.

At Yonsei Baro she reviews and adjusts every ClinCheck® plan herself, for adults and teens with Invisalign and for younger children with Invisalign First . She also plans Angel Aligner and Angel Aligner KiD cases, and tells patients plainly when braces would be the better tool .

Career

Earlier in her career, Dr. Lee worked as:

  • Director of Pediatric & Adolescent Orthodontics, CDC Children’s Dental Clinic (Cheongdam main clinic)
  • Orthodontist, Apgujeong Yonsei Baro Dental Clinic
  • Orthodontist, Samseong Yonsei Goun Miso Dental Clinic

Today she is the representative director of Yonsei Baro Orthodontics & Pediatric Dentistry, where she works alongside board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Ho-seon Lee . Her experience directing pediatric and adolescent orthodontics shapes the clinic’s approach to children’s orthodontics .

Research highlights

Dr. Lee’s work appears in four SCI(E)-indexed papers, including a review of TSAD-based systems, which use temporary skeletal anchorage such as mini-screws to move teeth backwards ( Seminars in Orthodontics ), and a study of how jaw-width mismatch before corrective jaw surgery relates to stability afterwards in Class II bites ( Applied Sciences , 2024). Her surgical-orthodontic research received a Korean Association of Orthodontists commendation in 2025, and her posters won Excellent Poster Awards at the KAO congresses in 2020 and 2024.

This research is directly relevant to patients with underbites , jaw asymmetry and protruding mouths .

Orthodontic research and academic work by Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee, Yonsei Baro, Seoul

Her approach: scientifically precise, aesthetically refined

Dr. Lee diagnoses the teeth, bite, roots, skeleton and whole face before recommending treatment. The science is in the 3D imaging and measurement; the refinement is in judging what will suit each person’s face. She personally handles every consultation and treatment explanation, and patients are not passed between doctors from first consultation to debonding. Read about our four steps of care .

Two personal experiences shape how she listens. “I’m a mother before I’m an orthodontist,” she says of treating children, and she had orthodontic re-treatment herself in her thirties, so she understands the questions adults considering orthodontics bring to a first visit.

Beyond dentistry: art and proportion

Art has run alongside Dr. Lee’s scientific training for many years. She studied in the Seoul Arts Center gifted art program from 2001 to 2005, held a solo exhibition, Feast of Symposion , in 2023, and received prizes at the Konst art exhibition and the Korean dentists’ art exhibition in 2024.

She links this trained eye for proportion directly to her clinical work: deciding how a smile should sit within the lips, the profile and the balance of the whole face.

Why does this matter for international patients?

  • Everything in English, from the same doctor. Your diagnosis, options, consent and progress are explained by Dr. Lee herself, in fluent English.
  • A shared professional language. Exchange training at USC and UCLA, the US National Board Dental Examination, and membership of the AAO, WFO and Angle Society give her common ground with orthodontists in other countries.
  • Records ready for your next move. If you leave Korea, she prepares full English records, 3D scans in standard formats and progress notes, and can contact your next orthodontist directly when needed. See continuing treatment started abroad and moving during treatment .

Questions about Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee

  • Is Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee a certified orthodontic specialist?

Yes. Dr. Lee is a board-certified orthodontic specialist (치과교정과 전문의), certified by Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare after an internship at Yonsei University Dental Hospital, an orthodontic residency at Severance Hospital and the national specialist examination. She also holds a PhD in orthodontics from Yonsei University, where she is an adjunct professor.

  • Does Dr. Lee explain treatment in English herself?

Yes. Dr. Lee speaks fluent English and personally handles every orthodontic consultation and treatment explanation, so you do not need an interpreter for your diagnosis, options or progress checks. You can also message the clinic in English by WhatsApp before your first visit.

  • Does Dr. Lee treat young children as well as adults?

Yes. She treats children, teens and adults. She previously directed pediatric and adolescent orthodontics at CDC Children’s Dental Clinic in Cheongdam, is a member of Korean growth-dentistry societies, and offers growth-phase care, Invisalign First and Angel Aligner KiD for suitable children. She will also advise simply monitoring growth when treatment is not yet needed.

  • What does Purple Diamond Provider status mean for my Invisalign treatment?

It is a 2026 Invisalign provider tier based on the number of cases a doctor treats, so it indicates broad experience with aligner treatment. It does not guarantee a particular result. What matters for your case is that Dr. Lee reviews and adjusts your ClinCheck plan herself and sees you at every check-up.

  • Will I see Dr. Lee at every orthodontic appointment?

Yes. At Yonsei Baro, patients are not passed between doctors for orthodontics. Dr. Lee examines you, plans your treatment, carries out adjustments and checks your retainers, from the first consultation to debonding and beyond. The clinical team supports her, but your orthodontist stays the same.
