What is a pediatric dental specialist in Korea?

Any licensed dentist in Korea may treat children. A pediatric dental specialist (소아치과 전문의) has gone further: after dental school and the national licensing exam, they complete a hospital internship and a residency devoted to children’s dentistry, then pass a national specialist examination. Successful candidates are certified by the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

In general terms, specialist training in pediatric dentistry covers:

  • how baby teeth and permanent teeth develop and erupt, and how to care for each;
  • preventing and treating tooth decay in young children, including fillings and crowns sized for baby teeth;
  • behaviour guidance — helping children feel safe and cooperate at their own pace;
  • sedation methods such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas), and when they are appropriate;
  • managing dental injuries, which are common in active children;
  • recognising early bite and growth problems that may need an orthodontist.

Dr. Ho-seon Lee holds this specialist certification. You can read more about how specialist titles work in Korea on our Our Doctors page .

How do Dr. Ho-seon Lee and Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee work together?

Children’s mouths change quickly between ages 6 and 12, as baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth arrive. Dental health and bite development affect each other, so having a pediatric dentist and an orthodontist in the same clinic makes coordinated care simpler. For example:

  • Early tooth loss. If a baby tooth must come out early because of decay or injury, the space it leaves can be reviewed with Dr. Sally Chaekyung Lee , the clinic’s orthodontist, and a space maintainer considered.
  • Bite and habit concerns. Crowding, crossbites, thumb sucking or mouth breathing noticed at a check-up can be referred for a children’s orthodontic assessment .
  • Healthy teeth during braces. Brackets and wires make teeth harder to clean, so regular check-ups and preventive care continue throughout orthodontic treatment. See dental care during braces .

Parents stay involved at every step, and decisions about treatment are made together with you.
